Native American Heritage Month

Featuring Aubrey K.

National Native American Heritage Month is celebrated each year in November. It is a time to celebrate the traditions, languages, and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities and ensure their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive with each passing generation.

We want to feature Aubrey K, our amazing massage therapist, and give her the space to share more about herself and her culture.A person with short, dark hair and bangs is wearing long, multi-colored beaded earrings. They have a nose piercing and small earrings in their left ear, looking over their shoulder. Their stylish look hints at a recent visit to Ihloff Salon and Day Spa.

  • Chikasha Saya. I am Chickasaw
  • My Chickasaw name is Hata̱fo which
    means grasshopper
  • I’ve been a Massage Therapist for 4 years,
at Ihloff for 1 1/2 years
  • To me my heritage means community, sharing meals, speaking chickasaw together, and taking care of each other. This is how we have survived the impact of colonization. Then, now, and always
  • I have been learning Chikasha’nompa (Chickasaw Language) for 2 years.
  • I want to write children’s books, and create art telling stories in our language. I’ll do what I can to ensure that this beautiful language survives another generation.
  • Chikasha Interesting Fact – Choctaws and Chickasaws were once the same people. One tribe. Long ago there were 2 brothers and their people, on a journey for a new home. Once we found the Mississippi River, one brother continued on, while the other stayed. The people chose who to follow, creating two strong, independent tribes.
